Eat 4 Success

It’s true: What people choose to eat is crucial to how they feel and perform throughout the day, which directly affects their quality of life and athletic performance. Eating properly is important because food choices affect not only long term health, but also directly affects athletic performance. In fact, the average person makes over 200 food choices each day!

There are various diets and eating myths constantly emerging, particularly for the endurance athlete; it's no surprise that many people are confused when choosing a diet strategy. It is supposed to be a relatively simple task, yet somehow it has evolved into a complex process!

What approach does Crystal take regarding nutrition? Based on current research and recommendations set by the American Dietetic Association, Crystal advocates natural food that is minimally processed and provides many nutrients for the amount of calories it contains.  Treats can be included in a healthy diet, just in moderation.  Many fad diets restrict certain food groups, but it should be the opposite!  All food groups work together to create a balanced diet.  In fact, the quality of the food is more important than the type of food itself.

What is it about?

“Eat 4 Success” is based upon four principles that are crucial in achieving optimum nutrition: Balance, Variety, Quality and Timing.

  1. Balance – This principle relates to both nutrition and exercise.  In order to maintain a healthy weight, a person’s calorie consumption must match his or her calorie requirements.
  2. Variety – In order to obtain optimal nutrients from the diet, a person needs to eat different types of food.  Instead of eating the same foods every day, venture out!  Try eating less commons foods such as butternut squash, quinoa, venison, pistachios, Greek yogurt or kiwi.
  3. Quality – Not all calories are created equal.  Instead of focusing solely on calorie consumption, pay attention to the nutrient quality of the food.  Choose foods that are nutrient-dense, which are foods that offer a lot of nutrition for the amount of calories they provide.
  4. Timing – When a person eats is almost important as what he or she chooses to eat, particularly for sports nutrition.  Always start off the day with a healthy breakfast!
